One ordinary day in HS Art class the teacher (who happened to be white) was helping me with a pastel project. She said, “Grab a flesh tone pastel and see if that balances the colors.” So I grabbed the brown one and stared at her. I didn’t see how brown would balance the composition of colors that I had. And she said “No, a flesh toned one.” I drug the brown pastel across my skin and replied “Who’s flesh?”
She looked at me shocked and apologetic. “It had not crossed my mind till now that “flesh tone” does not apply to all flesh but just one type of flesh.”And I just nodded and smiled because she seemed embarrassed (she was blushed) and I didn’t mean to throw her like that.
At that time I didn’t even realize I was making a statement, because I honestly didn’t know if she meant my flesh or hers. But by default she assumed I would grab the pastel of her skin color. And she was shocked that to me flesh tone meant brown, and what she called flesh tone I called peach.
She kept trying to fix it “I meant flesh tone in general, not your specific flesh tone.” Once again I just nodded. But still what made her think “flesh tone in general” was her color and not mine?

I tried telling my coworkers about this thing I bought on the internet that I’m really excited about, but I’m pretty sure all they heard was “malaysia, lip, chapstick”. …one of them is a “lip cuticle remover”, that’s what it says. so excited!
